SILVER SPRING, Md. — A Silver Spring resident has claimed a $1 million top prize from the Maryland Lottery’s Gold Rush 777 scratch-off game, marking a life-changing moment for the longtime player.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, purchased the $20 ticket on a whim during a work break from a self-service lottery machine. After scratching and scanning the ticket, he discovered the seven-figure prize and returned to work stunned, waiting anxiously to tell his wife.

Originally from Ethiopia, the winner said he began playing the Maryland Lottery in 2017 after learning about the games from friends. The decision to try his luck paid off just as the couple had recently closed on a new home.

The ticket was sold at Hillandale Beer & Wine, located at 10117 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. The retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Winner plans home updates, investment with prize money

The man said part of the winnings will be used for minor upgrades to their new home, with the rest set aside for investment and long-term financial security. He called the win a “perfectly timed blessing.”
