Smash and Grab Suspects Wanted in Newark Jewerly Store Heist

NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who stole jewelry from a store in Newark last week. The burglary occurred around noon on September 6, 2024, at Vinhas Jewelry, located in the 80 block of Ferry Street.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, the suspect, a Black male in his late 30s, broke the store’s front window using a small black hammer and reached through the opening to steal several pieces of jewelry before fleeing the scene. The suspect is described as 6 feet tall with a medium build and a receding hairline.

Surveillance footage shows the suspect initially wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, black shoes, and a black ski mask. After the burglary, the suspect was seen removing the mask and changing clothes on Congress Street, where he left the discarded items on the sidewalk. He was last observed wearing a black shirt, khaki pants, and black shoes.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
