Sondra Fortunato Beloved Miss Liberty Passes Away at 75

TOMS RIVER – Sondra Fortunato, known affectionately as “Miss Liberty,” a self-promotional beauty queen recognized for her extravagant outfits, voluminous blonde hair, and constant smile, passed away after a battle with illness. Fortunato died at the age of 75 at the Community Medical Center in Toms River on Thursday morning, as confirmed by her husband, John Ogden.

Fortunato’s passing comes after a challenging year, having battled cancer in her left eye and Bell’s palsy. Her presence was a staple at various events across the Jersey Shore, from high school graduations to professional sports games, where she was known for her enthusiastic spirit and charitable efforts.

Fortunato’s legacy extends beyond her public appearances. She was actively involved in raising money for charities and first responders and had the opportunity to pose with numerous celebrities over the years. Her passing marks the end of an era for the community that cherished her joyous and larger-than-life personality.

In memory of her vibrant life and contributions, Ogden has planned a Miss Liberty Day Parade on April 19. He intends to distribute Fortunato’s signs to the public for free during this event, saying, “I just don’t want to throw them out. I think everybody in Ocean County deserves a Sondra sign,” according to an interview in the Asbury Park Press.
