A major step forward for clean energy arrived in South Jersey this week as SJI and OPAL Fuels celebrated the grand opening of their new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Project in partnership with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) in Egg Harbor Township. The initiative, which officially marked its ribbon-cutting on October 23, 2025, represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration to deliver RNG directly into the South Jersey Gas pipeline network, providing local homes and businesses with a renewable and lower-carbon energy option.
The state-of-the-art RNG facility will capture and refine methane from landfill gas, transforming it into renewable natural gas to replace diesel and conventional fuel sources. The project is a milestone for SJI, whose renewable subsidiary, SJI Renewable Energy Ventures, spearheaded the effort. “We are thrilled to cut the ribbon on this project, which signifies another milestone for SJI,” said Chet Benham, President of SJI Renewable Energy Ventures. “This project underscores our commitment to innovation and continuing efforts in renewable energy solutions.”
With a nameplate capacity of 2,500 SCFM of landfill gas, the facility is expected to produce more than 650,000 MMBtu of RNG per year, equivalent to nearly 4.6 million gallons of gasoline. This renewable energy will be used both as a transportation fuel and directly injected into South Jersey Gas pipelines, making it the first RNG project to serve customers within the company’s service area. In addition to supplying cleaner energy, the project is expected to reduce methane emissions and prevent over 346,000 metric tons of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere annually.
ACUA President Matthew DeNafo praised the partnership, noting that the project aligns perfectly with the authority’s long-standing mission to turn waste into a resource. “ACUA has consistently demonstrated its commitment to exploring and implementing technologies that transform waste into a resource and improve our environment,” said DeNafo. “This project embodies that commitment, and we’re happy to celebrate its opening alongside our wonderful partners OPAL and SJI.”
Adam Comora, Co-Chief Executive Officer of OPAL Fuels, added that the project reflects OPAL’s mission of transforming waste into clean, domestic energy. “This project reduces emissions, improves local air quality, creates jobs, and strengthens American energy independence,” said Comora. “It’s an example of how landfills can benefit by generating financial value, cutting methane emissions, and displacing diesel to decarbonize transportation.”
The ACUA RNG facility marks the first collaboration between SJI and OPAL Fuels under their 50/50 joint venture to develop, construct, own, and operate RNG facilities nationwide. By converting landfill gas into a usable energy source, the project not only supports New Jersey’s renewable energy goals but also sets a national example of sustainable innovation through public-private collaboration.
