STAFFORD, Va. — A 41-year-old Stafford man was arrested Tuesday evening after allegedly picking up two children while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 5:48 p.m. to a report of a drunk driver at the Courthouse Community Center on Stafford Avenue. A witness told police the man “smelled of alcohol” and had picked up two juvenile family members.
Sergeant M.E. McCann located the suspect’s truck traveling on Courthouse Road after receiving a detailed vehicle description. Before a traffic stop could be initiated, the driver stopped at Wyche Road, exited his vehicle, and began yelling at another motorist, authorities said.
Deputies reported the man had slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet, and emitted an odor of alcohol. Two juveniles were in the vehicle along with several open cans of Bud Light.
Following field sobriety tests, the man was taken into custody and charged with DUI with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2 with minors present, drinking while driving, and two counts of child neglect.
He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $6,000 secured bond. The children were released to another family member.
