Stafford man with previous DUI back behind bars after driving the wrong way and nearly striking deputies head-on

STAFFORD, VA — A repeat drunk driving offender is facing multiple charges after narrowly missing a head-on collision with deputies while driving the wrong way on a Stafford County road Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. on March 30, Sergeant E.E. West and Deputy S.M. Kotter were traveling northbound on Widewater Road near Osterman when a Honda approached them head-on, driving southbound in the northbound lanes. Deputies reported the vehicle corrected itself just in time to avoid a collision.

“If this occurred moments before when deputies drove through the curve in the road, it is likely neither party would be able to avoid the collision,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Deputies turned around and stopped the vehicle, identifying the driver as 34-year-old David Albrecht III of Stafford. Albrecht told officers he was “tired,” but deputies observed signs of intoxication. Further investigation revealed Albrecht had a prior DUI charge in Stafford from 2018. A search of the vehicle uncovered both empty and full cans of alcohol.

Albrecht was charged with second-offense driving under the influence within ten years, drinking while driving, and failure to maintain the lane of travel. He is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.
