Stafford resident targeted in jury duty scam phone call

Scammer impersonates deputy in fake jury duty warrant scheme

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA – A Stafford County resident was targeted in a phone scam involving a caller who falsely claimed to be from the Sheriff’s Office and attempted to extort money over a fake arrest warrant.

Deputy F. C. O’Neill responded to the fraud report on Wednesday, January 21, at 12:29 p.m. on Ripley Road. According to the victim, a person posing as a law enforcement officer contacted them and claimed there was a warrant for their arrest due to missed jury duty.

The caller then instructed the victim on how to pay off the warrant, attempting to coerce money under false pretenses.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that law enforcement agencies do not call residents demanding payment or threatening arrest over missed jury duty. Anyone receiving such a call is urged to report the incident immediately and avoid providing personal or financial information.

The investigation into the fraudulent call is ongoing.
