State police investigating bank robbery in Newark

Newark, DE – The Delaware State Police have launched an investigation into a bank robbery that took place Saturday afternoon at the University Plaza shopping center.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., an unidentified black male suspect entered the Acme store located at 1 University Drive and approached the teller at the Citizens Bank branch within the grocery store.

The suspect handed the teller and branch manager a note demanding money. In an alarming turn of events, the suspect threatened to open fire if his demands were not met. Faced with this threat, the victims complied, and the suspect fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Despite efforts by responding troopers to locate the suspect in the vicinity, he evaded capture.

Neither the 31-year-old bank teller nor the 45-year-old branch manager sustained any injuries during the incident. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall with an average build. He was wearing a face covering and a dark jacket at the time of the robbery.

Surveillance images and video footage are not yet available.

The Troop 2 Robbery Unit has assumed responsibility for investigating this case. Detectives leading the investigation are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying and locating the suspect.
