Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Police introduced their newest team member Thursday — a 19-month-old black Labrador named Hamilton who will serve as a comfort and support dog for officers and staff.
Hamilton received his official SCPD shield from Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina during a press conference in Hauppauge. He is partnered with Police Officer George Politis and will be available to provide emotional support to sworn and civilian employees, particularly after traumatic incidents such as officer-involved shootings, as well as to dispatchers who manage stressful emergency calls.
“He’s there for anyone who needs him, for any reason,” police said.
Hamilton was donated to the department by Puppies Behind Bars, a nonprofit that trains service dogs through incarcerated puppy raisers. The program places puppies in correctional facilities at 8 weeks old, where they are raised and trained for up to two years.
The Suffolk County Police Foundation also provided a specially equipped police vehicle to ensure Hamilton can be safely transported while on duty.
