Wilmington, DE – A 64-year-old man was killed Thursday evening after being struck by a car while crossing West Newport Pike, Delaware State Police said.
The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Newport Pike and Rothwell Drive. Investigators said the pedestrian was crossing from south to north and had entered the westbound left lane when he was hit by a Nissan Sentra traveling westbound through the intersection. Witnesses told police the traffic light was green for the Sentra at the time.
The victim, identified only as a man from Mexico pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 73-year-old woman from Wilmington, was not injured.
Police closed West Newport Pike at Rothwell Drive for about three hours while the Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation.
Authorities have not filed charges and the investigation remains ongoing.
