ROCKVILLE, MD – Tyrone Joseph Curtis, a 34-year-old Silver Spring resident, has been arrested on Friday in connection with the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Amontae Robert Cunningham. The incident occurred on a WMATA bus on April 5, 2023, after the two men became involved in a verbal altercation.

Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes detectives learned that the argument escalated when Curtis pulled out a knife. The bus driver managed to deescalate the situation, but the conflict continued, prompting the driver to stop the bus on Amherst Avenue. Cunningham exited the bus, followed by Curtis, who allegedly stabbed him before walking away.

Cunningham was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified Curtis as the suspect and, on April 10, applied for a warrant charging him with first-degree murder.

Curtis was located on University Boulevard West and taken into custody on Friday. He was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit and is currently being held without bond.
