TONAWANDA, NY – Dareious T. Akbar, a 19-year-old resident of Buffalo, was brought before Tonawanda Town Court Justice J. Mark Gruber last Tuesday and charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Assault Upon a Police Officer, Assault in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree.
On Monday evening, around 8:00 pm, Tonawanda police officers pulled over a vehicle, reported stolen earlier in the day, for running a red light at the intersection of Sheridan Drive and Sheridan-Parkside Drive. During the stop, Akbar, allegedly the driver of the stolen car, reportedly fled the scene, dragging Officer David Piatek along. Piatek was rushed to ECMC where he continues to receive treatment for severe injuries.
Akbar’s felony hearing is set for Monday, June 5, 2023, and he has been held without bail. If found guilty of the highest charge, Akbar could face up to 25 years in prison.
