SILVER SPRING, MD – A 15-year-old male is in police custody, following a potential threat at a Montgomery County high school.

An anonymous tip led staff at Northwood High School in Silver Spring to conduct a self-search on the student, which revealed two rounds of ammunition.

Montgomery County Police were immediately contacted, and the student fled the campus. Northwood High School went into a shelter-in-place and during the course of the investigation, Forest Knolls elementary school was placed on lockdown.

A Montgomery County Police K-9 search recovered a handgun, which was located off school property. It has not been determined whether the handgun belonged to the student.

Within an hour of the shelter-in-place, the student was taken into custody without incident. He was unarmed.

This is an active and ongoing investigation and the appropriate charges are being determined as detectives gather more information. Due to the age of the student, his name will not be released.
