BALTIMORE, MD – A Texas truck driver’s routine stop at a Maryland Pilot Travel Center led to a $50,000 Powerball win. After delivering a load in Hagerstown, he purchased a few Powerball and Mega Millions tickets at the Pilot Travel Center on Greencastle Pike before hitting the road.

Using a combination of random numbers and family birthdays, the driver bought two Powerball tickets for the July 15 drawing. It wasn’t until three days later, during another long drive, that he checked his tickets online and realized he had won a third-tier prize.

“I was on the road again and decided to check my tickets on the Powerball website,” said the San Benito resident. After calling his son for confirmation, the family celebrated the news that he had matched four white balls and the red Powerball, earning him a $50,000 prize.

Due to Powerball rules, he had to return to Maryland to claim his prize. His company adjusted his route to facilitate the trip, allowing him to collect his winnings. Accompanied by his wife, he claimed the prize in Baltimore, planning to add it to his retirement fund.

The winner is on a lucky streak, having matched four numbers on a Powerball ticket just weeks before. His win is one of 36 $50,000 third-tier Powerball tickets sold in Maryland this year. Tonight’s Powerball drawing offers a chance at a $185 million annuity or $92.1 million cash option.
