Thief snatches briefcase from mercedes in newark shoprite parking lot

NEWARK, NJ – Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a black SUV linked to an auto burglary outside a ShopRite on Springfield Avenue last week, where a thief made off with a victim’s briefcase containing sensitive documents.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr., the incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. on January 26. The victim parked his white 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE in the ShopRite lot at 206 Springfield Avenue and went inside. When he returned about an hour later, he discovered his briefcase missing from the vehicle.

Surveillance footage captured a black SUV, possibly a Honda Accord, with tinted windows entering the parking lot around 1:30 p.m. Investigators say the driver parked next to the Mercedes for approximately eight minutes before leaving the area.

Police believe the suspect may have targeted the vehicle after spotting valuables inside. The briefcase reportedly contained personal paperwork and business contracts.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect vehicle or the person responsible is urged to contact the Newark Police Division’s Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips are accepted and may lead to a reward.
