Toms River Man Charged for Arson in Blaze that Injured Firefigthers

Brick Township, NJ – Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Charles Maulbeck, 51, from Toms River was charged with aggravated arson on October 7. The charge stems from a fire that took place in Brick Township on September 13.

On September 13, Brick Township Police Officers on routine patrol noticed smoke and heavy fire at a residence on Falkenberg Road. During efforts to control the fire, three firefighters sustained injuries. Although one firefighter opted out of medical assistance at the scene, two others received treatment and were discharged from a local medical facility.

A comprehensive investigation followed, involving the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Brick Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety.

The investigation determined that the fire began on the north side of the split basement determined to be incendiary by an unknown person or persons utilizing an open flame to available combustibles.
