Tornado warning issued as severe storms hit New Jersey and surrounding areas

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A tornado warning and severe thunderstorm alert were issued Tuesday evening for parts of Ocean, Mercer, Burlington, and Monmouth counties as fast-moving storms swept through central New Jersey.

At 6:55 p.m., the National Weather Service in Mount Holly reported severe thunderstorms tracking east at 30 mph, with winds reaching 70 mph and penny-size hail. Trained spotters confirmed damage, including large branches downed near Upper Freehold Township at 6:43 p.m.

The warning remains in effect until 7:15 p.m. and covers several municipalities including Toms River, Lakewood, Jackson, Pemberton, Lakehurst, and areas surrounding Six Flags Theme Park. Residents in affected zones are advised to take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

“Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings,” the weather alert stated.

Storm-related hazards include frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rainfall, and potential flash flooding. Officials caution against driving through flooded roadways and remind residents that lightning can strike from several miles away.

The line of storms continues to move eastward, prompting ongoing monitoring by local emergency services and the National Weather Service.
