Tragedy in DC as woman killed while walking near home

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 74-year-old woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a pedestrian crash in Southwest Washington after being hit by a vehicle while walking in a marked crosswalk.

Pedestrian struck while crossing in marked intersection

First District officers responded to a reported crash at the intersection of 6th Street and M Street, Southwest at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They found an adult female unconscious and not breathing after being struck by a vehicle.

DC Fire and EMS attempted lifesaving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She was later identified as Kathy Turner, 74, of Southwest, D.C.

Investigation underway into fatal collision

Initial findings show that the driver was turning into the eastbound lanes of M Street when they struck Turner, who was crossing within a marked crosswalk. She became trapped under the vehicle during the incident.

The driver remained on the scene. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.
