Troopers Shoot Man Fleeing Police After Shoplifting Incident

NEW CASTLE, DE – An officer-involved shooting occurred on Thursday, leaving a 28-year-old man dead.

The incident took place at Lowe’s on 2225 Hessler Boulevard. Detectives from the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force and the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team were involved.

The man, whose name is being withheld, was observed shoplifting and fled the scene. He struck an unmarked Delaware State Police vehicle while attempting to escape. Despite multiple commands to stop, the man resisted arrest and was shot by troopers.

The man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Two troopers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were later released.

The Delaware State Police are conducting an investigation into the use of force. The involved troopers will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
