BELMAR, N.J. — The Route 71 drawbridge connecting Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea is currently closed to all vehicle and boat traffic following a mechanical failure in the south leaf of the bridge, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).
The failure occurred earlier this week and has rendered the bridge inoperable, requiring a crane to manually lift the affected span. Emergency repairs are scheduled to take place over the weekend.
The bridge, which spans the Shark River, is a vital link for commuters and marine traffic. The unexpected closure has caused detours for both motorists and boaters in the area.
NJDOT noted that while temporary repairs are underway, the bridge is already scheduled for full replacement beginning in 2028. According to NJ.com, the replacement project will cost an estimated $163 million.
Until repairs are completed and the bridge is reopened, motorists and boat operators are advised to use alternate routes.
