PERTH AMBOY, NJ – A Sunday afternoon fire at home in Perth Amboy displaced one family and caused nearby homes to be evacuated as a safety precaution.
The Perth Amboy Fire Department responded to the call at 1:18 pm Sunday on Second Street.
“Police units arrived on the scene, confirmed a fire involving 222 Second Street, and evacuated occupants from adjacent homes,” the Perth Amboy Fire Department said. “Upon the fire department’s arrival, heavy smoke and fire were found coming from the 2.5 stories wood frame residential occupancy, and a second alarm was transmitted.”
Fire crews stretched multiple hose lines inside and around the structure to protect nearby buildings while the building was searched.
“Due to heavy fire conditions that rapidly deteriorated, crews were withdrawn as the fire went through the roof,” the department said. “It took three hours to bring the fire under control with multiple ladder pipes and master streams. Once the fire was knocked down, crews conducted an overhaul and extinguished any remaining hot spots.”
One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated and released from the hospital. No other injuries were reported. The Red Cross helped the family find temporary housing as the fire completely destroyed the home, making it unlivable.
