WALL TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Wall Township Police Department is alerting the public to a rise in abuse of Tianeptine, an atypical tricyclic antidepressant.
Not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Tianeptine has emerged in the illicit drug market and is sold in unregulated forms at gas stations, convenience stores, and online as a “natural” supplement for increasing energy and brain function.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the drug’s abuse and withdrawal symptoms can mimic those of opioid toxicity. Over-the-counter versions of Tianeptine are sold under various names such as ZaZa Red, TD Red, and Tianna. These are often referred to by users as “Gas Station Dope” or “Gas Station Heroin.”
Tianeptine is available in various forms, including bulk powder and pills. Some individuals use it as an opioid alternative or to self-treat anxiety or depression. The drug has severe adverse health effects including respiratory depression, severe sedation, and, in some instances, death. Methods of intake include oral, intravenous, and insufflation.
