NEWARK, N.J. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office today has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey against the Port Police and Security Guards Union, Local 1456, for violating the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959.
The lawsuit alleges that the union established bylaws rendering 98 percent of its membership ineligible for election to leadership positions. As a result, four individuals were disqualified from the nomination process, and a slate of five officers was elected unopposed.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul W. Kaufman, and the case remains an allegation of unlawful conduct to be proven in federal court.
