Woodbridge man wins $1 million Powerball prize with ticket bought in Manassas
Manassas, VA – A Powerball player from Woodbridge is now a millionaire after his ticket matched five numbers in the September 1 drawing, earning him a $1 million prize from the Virginia Lottery.
The lucky winner, who chose to remain anonymous—as allowed under Virginia law for prizes of $1 million or more—purchased the ticket at the Wawa located at 8704 Sudley Road in Manassas. The ticket matched the first five numbers drawn: 8, 23, 25, 40, and 53, missing only the Powerball number, which was 5.
According to lottery officials, the winner said he only plays when jackpots soar. Despite missing the jackpot, the matching five numbers without the Powerball still landed him one of the top second-tier prizes.
As a bonus, the Wawa location that sold the ticket will receive a $10,000 retailer incentive.
Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.
All profits from the Virginia Lottery go to support K-12 education across the state. The winner resides in Prince William County, which received over $63.3 million in Lottery funding for education last fiscal year. In total, the Lottery contributed more than $901 million toward Virginia public schools in Fiscal Year 2025.
