WOODBRIDGE, VA — A 22-year-old man has been charged with felony homicide following the death of his 4-month-old son, who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries last week, authorities said.

Gianni Romero-Coreas, of the 14300 block of Jeffries Road in Woodbridge, was arrested Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Manassas after detectives obtained an additional charge related to the infant’s death.

The child was initially hospitalized on July 16 after losing consciousness at the Elevations One Apartments on Jeffries Road. Medical staff determined the infant had suffered life-threatening injuries while in the care of his father, police said.

Romero-Coreas was arrested on July 17 and charged with felony child abuse. On July 20, the infant’s condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead. The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.

Following consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, police obtained the felony homicide charge on July 22. Romero-Coreas is being held without bond. A court date has not yet been scheduled.

Detectives said, “The investigation revealed the victim…had sustained life-threatening injuries while in the care of his father.”
