Walgreens in Jackson to Close Amid Pharmacy Chain Downsizing

JACKSON, NJ – A local Walgreens store, located at South Hope Chapel in Jackson, is set to close on April 3 as part of a nationwide strategy by pharmacy chains to reduce their number of locations.

The closure is a component of Walgreens’ plan to shutter 150 stores throughout 2024. This trend is not exclusive to Walgreens; Rite-Aid and CVS are also scaling back, with Rite-Aid closing 200 stores and CVS planning to close 900 locations by year’s end.

Industry analysts point to overexpansion as the root cause of these closures. Over the past several decades, these chains expanded aggressively, leading to the disappearance of nearly half of all independent pharmacies from 1980 to 2022.
