Jackson, N.J. – A major road project in Jackson has created mounting frustration for drivers and residents as Cedarswamp Road remains closed indefinitely, with police urging the public to obey detours and warning that township officials have no control over the timeline.
The closure, announced by the Jackson Police Department, stems from unanticipated issues tied to utility work required for a long-planned county road widening project. The project, overseen by the Ocean County engineering department and contractors, is designed to handle traffic from the Jackson 21 housing development approved in the early 2000s.
Police said the road will stay closed until utility work is complete, leaving the roadway impassable for regular traffic. While county officials expressed hope that the closure will not last long, no firm reopening date has been set.
Authorities emphasized that the decision is not in the township’s hands. “This matter is out of our control,” the department wrote in a public update, stressing that they are not the ones conducting the work or setting the schedule.
Local schools and transportation services have been notified to adjust bus routes, and parents will be advised of changes as needed.
Police asked residents not to drive through the closed intersection, citing both safety concerns and the disruption to emergency vehicles.
The extended closure has compounded congestion in surrounding neighborhoods, adding delays for commuters and emergency response. Officials said they will provide updates once county engineers determine when the road can safely reopen.
