Cambridge woman arrested after near miss with police ends in DUI bust

Cambridge, MD — A late-night routine traffic stop took a dramatic turn Saturday when a Cambridge woman allegedly swerved into oncoming traffic and drew the attention of nearby officers, leading to a DUI arrest just blocks away from the original stop.

Around 10:33 p.m. on Cedar Street near Peachblossom Avenue, Cambridge Police officers stopped Lydia Denise Cropper, 67, after they saw her vehicle strike a curb and veer into the opposite lane while they were conducting an unrelated traffic stop nearby on Dorchester Avenue.

When officers approached Cropper’s vehicle, they detected a strong odor of alcohol and noted visible signs of impairment. Cropper agreed to a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which police say she failed.

She was placed under arrest and transported to the Cambridge Police Department for additional testing. Cropper was later released on citations.

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol
  • Driving on a highway without a license

No injuries or collisions were reported in the incident. Police have not released further details about Cropper’s testing results or court dates.

The arrest happened less than a mile from Cambridge’s main commercial corridor, in an area frequently patrolled for traffic violations.
