Woman killed in Delaware crash after SUV pulls into path of tractor-trailer

Angola, DE – Tuesday — A 68-year-old woman was killed and three others were hospitalized after a Honda CRV pulled into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer at a rural intersection near Angola Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:55 p.m. at the intersection of Harts Road and John J. Williams Highway. According to investigators, the Honda was heading south on Harts Road and had come to a stop at a stop sign. For reasons still under investigation, the SUV then pulled out to make a left turn onto eastbound John J. Williams Highway, directly into the path of a westbound Freightliner Cascadia.

The truck slammed into the driver’s side of the SUV, killing the 68-year-old woman seated in the left rear of the vehicle. She was rushed to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The driver of the Honda, a 78-year-old man from Lewes, and the front passenger, a 36-year-old Lewes woman, both suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A 37-year-old woman from Jersey City seated in the right rear was critically injured and remains hospitalized.

The driver of the Freightliner, a 64-year-old man from Bowie, Maryland, was not injured and declined medical treatment at the scene.

John J. Williams Highway was closed for several hours while Delaware State Police investigated and cleared the wreckage. The cause of the crash remains under active investigation.
