Cecil County woman hits $100K with twin Pick 5 lottery tickets

North East, MD — A Cecil County woman hit the jackpot twice in one night after unknowingly buying two identical Pick 5 tickets—each worth $50,000—in the September 30 drawing, Maryland Lottery officials confirmed.

The longtime player typically buys just one ticket per draw but walked away with two identical plays for the same combination: 78048. When the number hit, she won both top prizes, totaling $100,000.

The winning tickets were purchased at the Wawa located at 2031 Pulaski Highway in North East. The store will receive a $1,000 bonus—$500 for each winning ticket sold.

The winner claimed her prize on October 1 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, accompanied by her husband. While he doesn’t usually play, he often encourages her to pick numbers that stand out on license plates or that have ties to important family dates.

In this case, she said she’d been playing 78048 consistently for about a year. “It just struck my fancy,” she said of the combination, which ultimately delivered her largest prize to date.

The Cecil County woman is no stranger to lottery luck—she previously won $10,000 in 2014 from a $20 scratch-off. While she said there are no immediate plans for the money, she and her husband have children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild who may benefit from the windfall.
