YONKERS, NY — A 53-year-old Yonkers man has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing that claimed the life of his brother-in-law on Saturday.

Officers responded to an apartment at 760 Bronx River Road at approximately 1:30 p.m. on November 16 after receiving a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they encountered John Singh, 53, at the apartment entrance with a stab wound to his chest. Singh told officers he had been stabbed and that he had also stabbed his brother-in-law.

Inside the apartment, officers discovered 78-year-old Bernard Barua unresponsive in bed with a stab wound to his chest. Both men were rushed to a local hospital, where Barua succumbed to his injuries. Singh was treated for his injuries and later arraigned on one count of second-degree murder, a Class A-I violent felony. He is expected to be remanded to the Westchester County Jail after his release from the hospital.

Detectives from the Yonkers Police Department’s Major Case Squad, alongside Digital Forensics and Crime Scene Units, are investigating the circumstances that led to the altercation. Preliminary findings suggest the two men were alone in the apartment when the incident occurred.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder that domestic violence can shatter lives at any time,” said Yonkers Police Commissioner Chris Sapienza in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends as they grieve this profound loss.”

Barua, a Yonkers resident, is remembered by police as a member of the community whose life was cut short by the violent encounter.
