Yorktown Resident Wins $50,000 in Virginia Lottery

YORKTOWN, VA — Katelynne Berland, a resident of Yorktown, recently won $50,000 by playing the Virginia Lottery’s Pick 5 game. On her first attempt at lottery gaming, Ms. Berland purchased a ticket that matched the winning combination of 2-9-4-2-3 in the April 14 day drawing. The winning ticket was bought from the 7-Eleven at 115 Ottis Street.

Ms. Berland intends to use her winnings to assist with her sister’s college tuition. The Pick 5 drawings offer a top prize of $50,000 for a $1 play, with the draws occurring daily at 1:59 PM and 11 PM. The odds of winning by matching all five numbers in exact order stand at 1 in 100,000.

Lottery profits are beneficial to the community, particularly in K-12 education. Last fiscal year, York County received over $5.3 million from lottery funds designated for educational purposes. In fiscal year 2023, the Virginia Lottery contributed more than $867 million to the state’s K-12 educational budget, accounting for about 10 percent of the total funds.
