Gunman broke into Springfield home, threatened to shoot homeowners

SPRINGFIELD, MA – A gunman broke into a home on Northampton Avenue yesterday and threatened to kill the homeowners.   On Sunday morning shortly after midnight, officers responded to Northampton Avenue for a report of a gun call. Officers located a suspect matching the description of the individual involved on Alden Street and the man, later identified as Edwin Velazquez, began to run away. Officers detained Mr. Velazquez on Collins Street and located a firearm he tossed into a dumpster nearby.

An investigation revealed that Mr. Velazquez forced his way into a home on Northampton Street looking for someone who may have been there. The occupants of the home observed a firearm in Mr. Velazquez’ sweatshirt pocket and he threatened to shoot the occupants. Mr. Velazquez then left the home without any further incident and was located on Alden Street. Mr. Velazquez was positively identified and arrested.
