DAYTONA BEACH, FL –  Miracle, the German Shepherd who was thrown from a second-floor motel balcony in Daytona Beach is recovering under the care of a foster family while the county is awaiting a custody hearing later this month.

“Miracle is doing well and under the care of a foster family. Under Florida Statute 828.073, Animal Services has filed a petition for custody for Miracle. A hearing is scheduled for the end of the month, and the court will decide custody,” the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department said. “Should the court grant Animal Services custody, the foster family has already expressed interest in having Miracle be part of their forever family.”

Earlier this week, Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motel when a woman, apparently under the influence of drugs, exited an adjacent room and threw her dog off the second-floor balcony. The woman, police said was threatened to jump off the balcony herself, which is what prompted the call.

“A woman who threatened to jump off the second floor at a Daytona Beach motel Monday afternoon instead threw her dog over the railing after deputies and police responded to the call,” the department said on Tuesday.

After deputies knocked on the door several times, the woman eventually came out with a leashed German Shepherd, which she picked up and suddenly threw over the railing to the ground. The dog landed feet first and ran away, but was corralled by bystanders. Murphy was immediately taken into custody by deputies and police.

“We encourage anyone interested in helping pets just like Miracle to become a volunteer with Volusia County Animal Services. Did you know that you can also make monetary donations to help pets in need? Volusia County Animal Services helps thousands of pets each year. We can use your support in any form,” the department said.
