Sarasota deputy shoots suicidal gunman

SARASOTA, FL – A Sarasota deputy has been involved in an officer-involved shooting and authorities are now investigating the incident.  According to the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office, they are currently investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Sarasota.

Deputies initially responded to the 5900 block of Wilkinson Road at 6:37 p.m., for the report of a suicidal subject. When deputies arrived, they located the suspect in the parking lot in between two vehicles.

The suspect made several suicidal threats and raised a handgun to his head. He threatened self-harm and fired a single shot in the air. As deputies continued to give verbal commands, the suspect aimed and fired a round at one of three responding deputies. Fortunately, the deputy was uninjured.


Upon the shot being fired, three deputies returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. He is expected to survive. The suspect has been identified as 59-year-old Michael Gillogly of Sarasota. Members of the sheriff’s office’s Officer-Involved Shooting Team are leading the investigation.
