Hackensack Meridian Health John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC), part of the NCI-designated Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center announced today an affiliation with Regional Cancer Care Associates (RCCA), a medical oncology/hematology practice in Toms River, NJ.

The practice, called Toms River Regional Cancer Center, will offer comprehensive medical and surgical oncology/hematology consultative services by community-based, regional, and national experts for all types and stages of cancer and serious blood disorders. The facility will also provide full infusion services, genomics analysis, and access to cutting-edge clinical trials. All care will be provided in accordance with JTCC quality standards and protocols. Internationally renowned researchers from JTCC will conduct specialty clinics at the location in addition to full-time RCCA oncology clinicians.

“The affiliation with Regional Cancer Care Associates is a key component of our efforts to bring together private oncology practices throughout the state of New Jersey with the aim of providing state-of-the-art cancer care and research to local communities,” said Andre Goy, M.D., MS, Chairman and Director of John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC) at Hackensack University Medical Center. “The medical oncologists at RCCA have been delivering quality care to patients in the Toms River area for decades, and we are pleased to formalize our collaborative relationship with them under the umbrella of our new affiliation.”

The medical and surgical oncologists at RCCA will continue to provide patient care to the local community as part of the JTCC network. Patients who are eligible to participate in JTCC clinical trials will be able to visit the RCCA satellite facility to consult with study staff and receive treatment as part of a study protocol.

“Affiliation with the John Theurer Cancer Center will help make Regional Cancer Care Associates a full-fledged cancer center that provides compassionate, multi-disciplinary care from medical oncologists and hematologists, facilitates access to cutting-edge clinical trials, and offers surgical, radiation oncology, genetic testing, and nursing services to the Toms River area,” stated Gurpreet S. Lamba, MD, a board-certified specialist in hematology/oncology, and a partner in RCCA. “Rather than having to travel long distances, patients in Monmouth and Ocean Counties can now get the complete package of care they richly deserve, right here in their backyard.”

In 2019, JTCC became part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. More recently, in August 2020 U.S. News & World Report recognized JTCC as the best cancer center in New Jersey.

“We are thrilled to be formally affiliated with John Theurer Cancer Center, a world-renowned teaching facility that is widely recognized for its comprehensive patient care, research, and education programs,” commented Kenneth D. Nahum, DO, a board-certified specialist in hematology/oncology and internal medicine, and a partner in RCCA. “Whether a patient needs a second opinion consultation, or is a candidate for immunotherapy or targeted therapy, that patient can directly benefit from the expertise of some of the world’s leading experts in cancer care and research, expertise that is now available locally as well as statewide,” added Dr. Nahum, who is also a clinical associate professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

“Affiliation with John Theurer Cancer Center will enable provision of world-class care to the local community while connecting patients to Centers of Excellence for multiple tumor types,” commented Thomas L. Bauer II, M.D., chair of Surgery and chief of Thoracic Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “When patients need surgery, access to those Centers of Excellence will make them more likely to undergo minimally invasive procedures, get out of the hospital faster, experience less pain and fewer complications, and return to work sooner.”
