Another teenage girl shot in Columbus as she walked home from school bus stop

COLUMBUS, OH – Another young girl was shot in Columbus, but not by police. A 16-year-old girl walking to her home from her school bus stop in Columbus was shot, not by police, but by 20-year-old Avonte Sanford.

On Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 2:41pm, Columbus Police patrol officers responded to the area of 3053 Gladsmore Court on the report of a shooting.


Upon arrival, officers located the 16-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower body. The victim was subsequently transported to a local area hospital in stable condition. It was later learned that the victim was walking home from the bus stop when she was struck by gunfire which was fired from a passing vehicle.

Witnesses were able to provide a suspect vehicle description and approximately one hour later, patrol officers located that suspect vehicle and detained the individuals within.20-year-old Avonte Sanford was one of those individuals and through the course of the investigation, was positively identified as the shooting suspect.

Sanford was arrested and charged with Felonious Assault.
