Suspect stole officer’s gun and struck him, then he was shot

PANAMA CITY, FL – The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at the Gazebo area of the Government Center on 11th Street in Panama City.

Michael Caleb Barrett, age 38, of 12th Street in Springfield, was a suspect in a Grand Theft case. It is believed Barrett took over $5,000 in valuables from a home in Callaway. A physical altercation ensued when the investigator confronted Barrett, who resisted arrest and took the investigator’s firearm, striking him in the face with it.


The investigator regained his firearm and fired at Barrett, striking him. Barrett is in stable condition in a local hospital. He now faces charges of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery. The investigator is also in stable condition at a local hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
