’69 El Camino destroyed in fire started in carburetor

FAYETTE CO, IA – A 1969 El Camino was destroyed in a fire this weekend.

On May 1st, 2021 Deputies were called to Palace RD/45th Street for a vehicle engulfed in flames. Upon arrival, it was discovered a 1969 Chevy El Camino was along the shoulder of 45th St with fire damage. Upon investigation, it was discovered Wade Stevens, 45, of Hazleton was southbound on Palace RD when he noticed smoke coming from the hood of the vehicle. Stevens pulled and discovered the vehicle to be on fire. It was discovered the carburetor started on fire spreading to the rest of the vehicle. The driver received minor injuries to his hand. The vehicle was a total loss.

In another incident, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a rollover crash involving an 18-year-old driver.


On May 2, 2021, at approximately 12:08 AM the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a vehicle rollover on X Avenue south of Highway 93, near Sumner. After further investigation, a Dalton James Ray Dudley, age 18 of Sumner, had been driving southbound in a 2008 Ford Focus when he lost control and entered the west side ditch. Dudley received minor injuries and was taken to the Sumner Hospital prior to Deputy’s arrival. The vehicle received approximately $3000 in damage. Dudley was issued a citation for Failure to Maintain Control.
