Island Heights police officer attacked by fire extinguisher wielding

ISLAND HEIGHTS, NJ – On June 13th, Island Heights Police Department Patrolman Mellott responded to a residence on Central Avenue for a female attacking a neighboring home, by pounding on the side of the residence.

Upon arrival, Ptl. Mellott was met by a female wielding a fire extinguisher. The female began to spray the officer and his patrol vehicle with the chemical agent from the extinguisher. The female then requested for Ptl. Mellott that he took her to jail immediately. At this time, Ptl. Mellott tried de-escalating the situation by talking with the female, with no luck.

The female then stated that she was going to hit Ptl. Mellott with the fire extinguisher and made a quick motion towards the Officer. With his training and experience Ptl. Mellott was able to disarm the female and was able to safely place her under arrest. The female was charged with – Assault on a Police Officer, Terroristic threats, and Disorderly conduct.
