Cop shot during a standoff with barricaded suspect holding newborn baby hostage in Long Branch

LONG BRANCH, NJ – A detective with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office was shot in the lower body by a gunman who barricaded himself inside a home on Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch last night.

The MCPO issued the following statement:

A Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective sustained a lower-body gunshot injury in the encounter that precipitated the continuing standoff with a barricaded suspect on the 200 block of Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch. The Detective was taken to a local hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. No shots were fired by police.


Detectives were attempting to serve a warrant when the suspect shot the detective multiple times through the door and barricaded himself in the home.

The MCPO has not provided details on the officer or the status of the victim at this time.

CBS reported the suspect was holding a newborn baby hostage. The baby was reported as being a two-week-old newborn belonging to the suspect’s girlfriend.
