Suspect in Moulton Christmas Eve murder arrested while trying to flee cops

MOULTON, AL – Alabama authorities are investigating the Christmas Eve murder of 20-year-old Gavin Hargrove.

On December 24th, 2021, the Lawrence County Sheriffs Office received a call of a possible deceased person at a residence in the 6900 block of County Road 217. The Lawrence County Special Response Team made an entry into the residence and discovered a body. Investigators process the scene and found Gavin Ryan Hargrove age 20 of Trinity, Al deceased. It appears Mr. Hargrove succumbed to injuries he received from a gunshot wound.

A search ensued for the suspect, Timothy Dakota McCrary, 21 was launched by the Lawrence County Alabama Sheriff’s Office.


At approx 6 pm on Christmas Day McCary was spotted in the Langtown Community near County Road 214 and Alabama Highway 33. Lawrence County Deputies, Moulton Police, Courtland Police, Alabama State Troopers, and Agents with the ALEA SBI attempted to locate McCary in the area around County Road 501. A citizen spotted McCary approximately a mile away on County Road 240 at 9:30 pm. McCary attempted to outrun Deputies on foot but was quickly apprehended. It is not known at this time what prompted McCary to shoot Hargrove.
