Montgomery County crash detectives find owner of vehicle used in fatal hit and run

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have located and identified the vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on January 17, 2022.

59-year-old Luz Marina Roa was struck and killed in the intersection of Veirs Mill Rd. and Ferrara Ave. in Wheaton. Based on the evidence at the scene, the striking vehicle was determined to be a light blue Volkswagen Passat.

A press conference, led by CRU Sgt. Elijah Kinser on Friday, January 28, resulted in several tips identifying the owner of the vehicle and where it could be found.


CRU detectives tracked down the vehicle in Washington, DC and have obtained a statement from the operator of the Passat. He was released pending charges from the State’s Attorney’s office.

The vehicle has been recovered and is being processed for evidence.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. The State’s Attorney will make the determination on charges following completion of the investigation.
