Montgomery police mourn loss of veteran police officer

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – On Friday, February 4, 2022, at approximately 8:06 a.m., Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to Spencerville Road for a single-vehicle collision.

Montgomery County Police Officer Douglas Haggerty was traveling eastbound on Spencerville Road, after Good Hope Road, when he reportedly began to experience an incapacitating medical event.

A preliminary investigation has determined that Officer Haggerty suffered a medical crisis, leading to the collision. Police and Fire Rescue performed life-saving measures at the scene and Officer Haggerty was transported to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.


A juvenile in the vehicle was able to exit and call 9-1-1 and was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Police Officer III, Douglas Haggerty, age 36, has been a Montgomery County Police Officer since July of 2010. Officer Haggerty was currently serving as an officer in the Rockville District, and previously served as a patrol officer in the Silver Spring District.

“The men and women of the Department thank the community for their continued thoughts and prayers for the family of Officer Douglas Haggerty and his children,” the Montgomery Police Department said in a statement.
