EAGLE PASS, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry detained a wanted man with an outstanding felony warrant for murder out of Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
“Effective utilization of our national law enforcement databases allows officers to identify and apprehend wanted fugitives, bringing those charged with these heinous crimes to justice,” said Port Director Paul Del Rincon, Eagle Pass Port of Entry.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, Mexican authorities coordinated with CBP to turn over Jose Enrique Lara Mercado, a 54-year-old Mexican citizen at the Camino Real International Bridge. CBP officers secured Lara Mercado and escorted him to secondary examination where biometric verification confirmed his identity along with the active felony arrest warrant from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
A Maverick County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived to take custody of Lara Mercado and transported him to the county jail.
Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is a centralized automated database designed to share information among law enforcement agencies including outstanding warrants for a wide range of offenses. Based on information from NCIC, CBP officers have made previous arrests of individuals wanted for homicide, escape, money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution, sexual child abuse, fraud, larceny, and military desertion. Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
