Teen Couple Arrested for Armed Robbery Spree in Newark

NEWARK, NJ – An armed robbery spree that shook the city of Newark this weekend has come to an end after police arrested and charged a teenage man and woman for the robberies.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara reports the arrest of Zykee Gregory, 19, and Janae Baker, 18, both of Newark, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred yesterday.

“I commend Sergeant Stephen Dellavalle and his team for their vigilance in so quickly identifying and apprehending the armed robbery suspects,” Director O’Hara said. “Individuals who commit crimes should be aware that our detectives are committed to thoroughly investigating violent crimes that occur in Newark.”


According to police reorcs, at approximately 12:15 a.m., a woman in the 200 block of Mt. Prospect Avenue was approached by a man and woman who exited a black SUV and demanded her personal property at gunpoint.

“The suspects stole the victim’s purse and cell phone, which was active in Orange, East Orange, and in Newark. Police observed a man and woman fitting the description of the suspects in the 200 block of Peshine Avenue. The suspects were found in possession of a handgun, the victim’s purse, and an empty wallet,” the department said in a statement.

A second robbery occurred in the 200 block of Grafton Avenue at 11:50 p.m. Two women were robbed at gunpoint by a male and female after the victims exited their vehicle. The suspects took the victims’ cell phones and a wallet.

Police said both Gregory and Baker were arrested without incident. Each faces charges of robbery, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
