The Dodge went airborne and traveled over the guardrail for a short distance,” the department said. “The driver’s side of the vehicle then struck a utility pole and ejected both the driver and front passenger who were not restrained. The 54-year-old male operator of the Dodge was transported to Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.”

The front passenger was admitted to Christiana Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Southbound I-495 from the Pennsylvania line to the Edgemoor Road exit was closed for approximately 5 hours while the investigation was completed, and the roadway cleared.
