NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Violent Crimes Initiative carried out the execution of a search warrant for the arrest of Kanif R. Sharif, 23, of Newark, that resulted in the recovery of an assault weapon and handgun on Thursday.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said Sharif was arrested during the execution of a search warrant today at a residence in the 200 block of Garside Street.

“He resisted arrest and also assaulted two officers at the scene. Police recovered a Mac-10 style 9 mm assault weapon, a .380 Ruger handgun, and approximately $4,200.00 in cash from the residence. Sharif faces a charge of contempt along with pending federal weapon possession charges as well as aggravated assault on a police officer,” O’Hara added.

“I thank U.S. Attorney Phillip R. Sellinger for the partnership between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Newark Police Division in the ongoing effort to remove illegal weapons from our streets,” Director O’Hara said. “I also commend the Newark Police detectives assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for their outstanding work in apprehending this suspect.”
