Syracuse Police Department Welcomes New Police Chief

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Police Department had a changing of the guard on Friday as Mayor Ben Walsh announced the promotion of 1st Deputy Chief Joseph Cecile to the position of Chief of Police.

“Chief Cecile has been with the department for 36 years, serving our community with honor and distinction. Congratulations on your new appointment, Chief,” the Mayor said in a statement.

The Syracuse Police Department welcomed the promotional and thanked Chief Buckner for his service to the department and the people of Syracuse.

“We would like to recognize former Chief Kenton Buckner, who served the residents of Syracuse for the past three years,” the department said. “Under his leadership, the Syracuse Police Department made major progress in its policies and procedures, recruiting and diversity on the force, and community engagement. We wish you well in your future endeavors.”
