PITTSBURGH, PA – A routine DUI traffic stop in Whitehall Borough turned for the worse for a local police officer on Saturday.

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, at approximately 3:44 am, officers from the Whitehall Borough Police Department conducted a traffic stop for the suspicion of DUI in the 4700 block of Clairton Blvd (Rt. 51).

“The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident; however, the passenger became non-compliant and would not listen to officer’s commands,” the department said. “The passenger jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle. As officers attempted to get him out of the vehicle, he placed the car into drive and grabbed hold of one of the officers. The officer was dragged approximately 240 feet before being thrown from the vehicle.”

Police said the officer was transported to an area hospital and was treated and released on Monday. The investigative assistance of the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit was requested.

Detectives responded and initiated an investigation.

The vehicle was a gray 2018 Chrysler 300 bearing PA registration LNY9582. The actor is described as a middle-aged black male, heavy set, possibly from the McKeesport area. County Police are asking the public if they recognize this male or see the vehicle involved to call 9-1-1 or call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
